BlackBerry - Chapter 1
“But why Dresden?” whined Lori while he was
constantly fiddling with the keys of their car.
“Because I’ve always wanted to visit it.
It’s a beautiful city with an interesting history. We can’t always choose our
destinations based on how delicious the food is there.” answered Ben calmly for
the nth time.
Maybe Lori loved his stomach the most and
only wanted to do things he fully enjoyed, but right now Ben could not care
less. They were friends since kindergarten, and Ben knew he did not need to
take him seriously. It was kind of funny that the Italian was never interested
in anything related to history, since he was born in a well-respected family
which played important part in it. But, of course, it was in the past and now
the eldest son was travelling, visiting places with a Swiss man who happened to
be his best friend.
Five years ago Ben came up with the idea of
travelling. He wanted to see everything himself and Lori had nothing against going
with him but sometimes - like now - he wished Ben had considered what he wanted
a bit more. Ben, on the other hand, wanted to see Dresden and no matter how
much Lori whined, he was not about to change his decision.
“We’re already here, so you should try to
enjoy our stay. Who knows, maybe this city can be interesting even for someone
like you.”
“Thanks, now I feel so much better… But even
when you say such things, I feel your love towards me. I know you have some
hardships expressing it, but I don’t need any reassurance to be aware of it.”
“Good. Then you won’t be angry when I tell
you that I bought some really expensive tickets to the opera and spent all the
money we had for today’s food on them.” said Ben and smirked as Lori’s face
fell.
“But why opera? You know that I hate it!”
“Nah, don’t overdramatize it.”
“For you it’s easy to say but you didn’t
have a gardener grandpa whose performances you needed to watch thousands of
times…”
Ben was just about to answer when they saw
dark, thick smoke billowing towards the sky. They took off running immediately
and after some seconds a burning house came into their sight. In front of it
was a young woman, around their age, slumped to her knees and crying desperately.
Lori froze and could only watch as Ben slowly went up to the woman.
Ben clenched his fists angrily but took a
deep, calming breath before he got there. He lowered himself to the ground and
then carefully touched the fragile woman. She glanced at him frightened. There
was sorrow in her eyes. Ben knew the look. She surrendered.
“Don’t do this. You’re alive. Live for them
if nothing else is left. Your family wanted you to be happy and their death
does not change this. You shouldn’t even consider doing something so terrible
to yourself. Suicide is cowardice.”
Ben told her a bit harshly.
It was like breaking a spell. It was not
that it was surprising that someone thought suicide was unacceptable, but that
her dad always told the same thing word
by word. The woman looked up and found a stranger in front of her. Ben held
out his hand towards her. She hesitated. Maybe it was not worth it. Maybe she
should just leave everything behind; maybe she should not pay any attention to
this man. But then she thought of her family, of what this man in front of her
had said, and slowly accepted the extended hand…
